Sediment Intelligence for Water Infrastructure

The world's reservoirs are quietly losing capacity.
We built the system that keeps the water flowing.

CHATTIGR develops non-blocking, energy-efficient sediment separation technology for reservoirs, rivers, and hydropower — engineered in Norway and grounded in multiphase-flow research.

Why CHATTIGR

The reservoirs we depend on are running out of room.

Sediment trapped behind dams is quietly shrinking the world's water storage — the same storage that supplies drinking water, irrigation, flood control, and hydropower. Around 5,000 large reservoirs across the EU and UK alone already hold over 1 billion m³ of accumulated sediment.

23–28%
of global reservoir storage capacity is projected to be lost to sediment by 2050

"Dredging and flushing alone are financially and technically unsustainable — new approaches to sediment management are needed in the energy transition."

Our Approach

Non-blocking, energy-efficient, built to adapt.

We develop hydrodynamic separation technology that intercepts sediment inline — before it ever reaches critical infrastructure — without blocking the flow or requiring the reservoir to be drawn down. Our systems integrate smart monitoring, including IoT sensors, AI, and digital twins, so performance can be tracked, predicted, and improved over time.

Hydrodynamic

Non-blocking separation

Sediment is intercepted in the flow itself — no check dams, no reservoir drawdown, no sudden downstream shock.

Digital

Digital Twin & AIoT

Real-time monitoring and predictive modelling keep performance visible and adaptive, season after season.

Efficient

Water- and energy-conscious

Designed to minimize water loss compared with conventional flushing or dredging, and to run passively where possible.

Let's Talk Water

Whether you operate a reservoir, engineer a solution, fund water infrastructure, or study sediment transport — we'd like to hear from you.

How We Think

The principles.

I

Water first

Sediment comes out without draining the reservoir or cutting off the river's natural sediment supply downstream.

II

Physics before pumps

Our systems are built to use the water's own flow and potential energy, not to fight it with energy-intensive dredging or blocking structures.

III

Grounded in multiphase research

Every design decision is grounded in multiphase-flow research and validated.

IV

Designing the living ecosystem

Utilities, hydropower operators, farmers, and the ecosystems that depend on a living river all sit at the same table when we design.

Benefits for All

A dependable water supply starts upstream.

Hydropower plants enjoy lower maintenance costs and reliable storage for consistent power. Aquatic ecosystems are protected and strengthened. Our solutions fortify reservoirs, rivers, and surrounding communities against an increasingly unpredictable climate.

The Technology

Sediment management that works with the river, not against it.

Reservoirs have relied on the same handful of methods for decades — and each comes with a serious trade-off.

Check dams

Fill up quickly, carry a high failure risk, and interrupt the river's natural biological and sediment corridors.

Hydraulic & mechanical dredging

Costly and energy-intensive, and, in some cases, lowering reservoir level.

Flushing & sluicing

Can lose enormous volumes of water and send a sudden, high-turbidity shock downstream.

Bypass tunnels

Effective where geography allows, but expensive to build and highly site-specific.

Our Approach

Inline, non-blocking, and monitored in real time.

CHATTIGR's technology intercepts sediment inline — upstream of the reservoir or critical infrastructure — using hydrodynamic separation that doesn't block the flow or force a drawdown. Where site conditions allow, it runs on the water's own energy rather than constant pumping. Sensors, AI, and digital twins keep performance visible and let the system adapt as conditions change, from routine flow to storm-driven extremes.

01

Intercept upstream

Sediment is separated inline before it reaches the reservoir, turbine, or treatment plant — not after the damage is done.

02

Monitor continuously

IoT sensors and a digital twin track flow, turbidity, and system performance around the clock.

03

Adapt automatically

AI-assisted control adjusts operation to changing flow and sediment conditions, including storm events.

See It In Context

The silent threat facing reservoirs, rivers, and water systems.

Team

Scientific rigor and vision.

CHATTIGR was founded in Norway in 2023, grown out of an intensive partnership with the University of Bergen. By 2050, the world risks losing roughly a quarter of its reservoir storage — a vital buffer for drinking water, irrigation, flood control, and carbon-free energy. We build systems that protect that buffer, with integrity, transparency, and environmental stewardship as a baseline, not an afterthought.
